Cricket was first played in Methley in1867. It is reported that in those days Methley had two cricket teams, Methley Moorhouse and Methley Gentlemen, presumably one team played at Moorhouse and the other team possibly played at the brickyard field, later the club was to adopt the name of Methley Victoria. The two fields, it is suspected, were on the flatland adjacent to the river with the grass cropped probably with the use of goats or sheep, the brickworks field was certainly near to the site of the old coal staithe and basin (both these now obliterated with the realignment of the river). The cricket club relocated to its  present Little Church Lane ground about 1874 and has played in the lee of St Oswalds Church in its archetypal village setting to the present time.
