Law 21            THE RESULT

1. The side which has scored a total of runs in excess of that scored by its opponents in its completed innings shall be the winners.

2. The umpires may award a match to the opposing side if one side either concedes defeat or refuses to play.

3. If an umpire considers any action a refusal to play, the umpires together must ascertain the reason for the action
(i) if they consider it a refusal to play by one side, they must so inform the captain of that side
(ii) if he persists in the action, they shall award the match to the other side
(iii) if the action is not a refusal to play, playing time lost will be added at the close of play on that day. In a limited over match no overs shall be deducted to compensate for lost time.

4. If the scores are equal when the side batting last has completed its innings, the result is a tie unless special playing conditions state otherwise.

5. If the match has not been won by either side and it is not a tie, the result is a draw.

6. As soon as a result is reached, the match is at an end. Nothing that happens thereafter shall be regarded as part of it. For example with the scores tied with one ball left to bowl a call of "No Ball" will secure victory for the side batting last even though the ball is struck to the boundary. The batsman will receive no credit for his efforts which may prevent him reaching a century having bee on 99 before the delivery is bowled. Tough luck!
On the other hand,  if the batting side need one run to win, a completed run will not be scored if the striker is subsequently caught on the second run from that delivery

7. The side batting last wins by a number of wickets ; the side batting first wins by a number of runs. The result may also be Match Conceded or Match Awarded.

8. The umpires have responsibility of making any decision relevant to the correctness of the scores.

9. If a mistake in scoring is discovered after the players leave the field, the match shall be resumed if the side batting last had not completed its innings unless either side concedes defeat.

10. If the overs have been completed, the umpires must advise the captains of the corrected scores and result.

11. The result of a match may not thereafter be changed once the umpires have agreed with the scores as to the correctness of the scores.
