Law 1.             THE PLAYERS

1. The Law states that a team will normally consist of eleven players.

2. By agreement, the team may consist of more or less than eleven players. No more than eleven players may field at any one time.

3. One of the players must be nominated as captain.

4. The captain, or his deputy (Team Manager in the case of junior cricket), must nominate his team, in writing, to one of the umpires before the toss.

5. Once nominated the team may only be changed with the opposition.

6. If the captain is unavailable at any time, a deputy must act for him. This includes the nomination of the team and the toss.

7. The person deputising for the captain to make the the toss need not be a nominated player. Once the toss has been made, only a nominated player may deputise for the captain.

8. The captains are responsible for ensuring at all times that play is conducted within the spirit and traditions of the game, as well as within the Laws.

In junior matches the Team Managers should ensure that players wear helmets, when batting or when keeping wicket close to the stumps.The viewing space left between helmet visor and grille (faceguard) should be adjusted to prevent a ball passing through and thus prevent risk of facial injury.
